Pain & Pole

Pole Fitness has been climbing up in the charts as another form of fitness. This is a female dominant sport but it is not uncommon for males to participate as well. We’ve watched the professionals compete in the Pole Championships. We’ve seen the videos of the online pole fitness gurus like Dirdy Birdy, Michelle Shimmy, Felix Cane and so many more. The pole fitness community is growing and you want to be a part of it. That is great! However, before we jump right into it, there are two things in particular I’d like to address. Pain & Bruising.

When it comes to pain, I want to say that you won’t feel it but the truth is, it will hurt. Yes it will. The more advanced your moves become the more it will hurt. Why? Your skin needs to be exposed in order for you to grip and hold yourself in certain positions. Some of the moves you learn, with more practice, eventually the pain actually does go away. They call this “getting rid of your virgin skin”. Any part of your body that uses the pole to help you grip that has never touched the pole before, you will feel pain. The most common areas are along your legs, your thighs, your sides and even your arms and sometimes even your shoulders. With more time put into practicing these moves again and again, however, in most areas, the pain does go away. I know this will be very hard to believe the very first time you try a certain move but believe me, the pain really really does go away. Just keep at it.

Bruising, unfortunately, is part of the sport. Although pain eventually will start to fade, bruising will still return. Bruising will always be a part of the sport. Please ask yourself, are you willing to put up with the bruising in your pole dancing adventure? Or is your skin being clear of bruises a lot more important to you then being able to pull off that knee hold or superman? If so then perhaps pole dancing isn’t for you. For the ones who are eager to continue even with bruises, there are things you can do to help the bruises heal faster. Personally I like to run to my personal bruise care cream Arnica Gel. You can get this at your local health store or online. I’ve used it personally and with liberal application, i found my bruises to have fully dissappeared within 2-3 days where as regular bruises usually take about a week to heal.

Now that we’ve gotten two of the most important points out of the way and if you’re still reading on and eager to start pole dancing then have I got some great news for you ladies!

Pole Fitness is a combination of Strength Training and Cardio. With proper training you will find yourself increasing in flexibility, strength and balance. Just like anything else, when you first start out in pole fitness, you will learn how to practice to build strength so you are able to advance into doing more complicated moves which require more strength and flexibility along the way. “Not having upper body strength” Is NOT an excuse to not try. That is what the classes are for. To help build to more advanced moves.

If you decide to go the “Personal Trainer” Route I do strongly advise you to be very careful. I know we are all eager and I know we all want to be able to do those pretty advanced moves now but if you do not build your body to that level and just jump right into the advanced stuff, you can end up severely injuring yourself and that can result in a long time of healing and worse discourage you from even trying it again. I highly suggest looking into starting off with proper training perhaps a studio in or around the city for the first half a year just so you understand that safety is number one when we learn any new moves.

Lastly, I have saved the best for last. If you decide that yes you love pole, yes you want to continue with doing pole and you are in it for the long run, you will find that You will be in the best shape of your life! It is a sport after all, it takes practice, consistancy, discipline, focus and even creativity to keep pole fitness up. With all that comes the reward of a great looking body.
